To hold water 按字面解釋當(dāng)然可以說是"不讓水漏出來"。但是，它的另外一個(gè)意思是指某一個(gè)人找的借口、提出的理由、或說的話是確實(shí)的，站得住腳的。美國人經(jīng)常說："That excuse simply doesn't hold water."意思是：那個(gè)借口根本站不住腳。我們來舉個(gè)例子：

今天要講的另外一個(gè)和water這個(gè)字有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語是 water off a duck's back。

鴨子身上的毛就像雨衣一樣，水在上面呆不住，一下全滑掉了。因此，water off a duck's back 是指毫無作用。就像下面這句句子所說的：

例句-2："I keep telling my friend it's foolish to gamble all of his money, but it's like water off of a duck's back."

這是說："我一直告訴我的朋友，不要那么傻，把所有的工資都用在賭博上。可是，我的話對(duì)他全然不起作用。"

另外一個(gè)例子是：
