Learning English in an English-speaking count ry has many advantages. It is, therefore, a goodidea to learn English in Britain or America. However, I believe it is not the only way to learn thelanguage .

To begin with, most students in non-English-speaking countries learn English in high schools oruniversities. Although their spoken English is not usually of a very high standard, theirknowledge of grammar is often quite advanced. This is certainly useful when later they cometo an Englishspeaking country to perfect the language.

However, it is obviously advantageous to learn English in English-speaking countries where, every day, students will have ample chance to practise listening and speaking. In addition , students can experience the foreign culture, which greatly helps understand the language. This is especially true ifthey choose to live with an English or American family. Still, sincestudents are taught by native speakers, their reading and writing skills will improve as well .

As every coin has two sides, learning English at home also proves effective. At home studentswill have less stress and fewer problems in accommodation, expensive tuition and living costs .

In conclusion, it is preferable to study English in an English-speaking country, but areasonable level of English can be achieved at home, if a student is gifted and dedicated tostudy.

Every time I go to the book store, I will buy some books like dictionaries, reference bookswhich are of pragmatic use and classical literary works which are to be chewed and digested. Unlike some people who buy books just for the purpose of filling their shelves and s howingothers how learned they are, my purpose is simple and practical — reading. Moreover, the booksI want to keep are usually too expensive and I can afford only a few volumes.

From libraries I borrow books that are to be swallowed, because, on the one hand, library booksare not allowed to keep a long time; and on the other hand, the library is a sea of books and Ithink I have to do speed-reading, that is, to swallow as many as I can.

I also borrow books from friends, especially new ar rivals. I just want to have a taste. If thetaste is good, then I will go and buy them to add to my store. If not, well, just for a taste.

In short, I don't mind wher e I can get books, but books are always my source of knowledgeand wisdom

There are books on various subjects — history, literature, philosophy, science, fine arts, etc. When you a re to choose from among a vastnumber of subjects the best books to read, you will feel quite at sea. I therefore suggest that, before you proceed to read any book, you try to find out what others have done before you, that is read the results of other people's labour first. Usually newspapers or magazines arealways your convenient guide to the world of best writings.

Another problem is how to read. Here, I would offer two suggestions: concent ration andreflection. You cannot well unde rstand what is said in book s unless you concent rate yourmind on what you read. And then you must think over what you have read. This is reflectionwhich helps to s ummarize your reading . To a great extent , concentration and reflectionare interdependent.

A reading habit thus formed will prove valuable to you. Whenever you have spare time, youwill resort not to places of pleasure, but to the bookshelves, you will not feel lonesome whenyou are alone, because you can see all kinds of characters moving and acting on the pages, andyou can hear all kinds of good counsel.
